The Frank's Secret Annex
Cramped quarters is all the Franks and Van Daans knew for an entire year. Camped out in on old building previously owned by Mr.Frank they all hid from the Nazis. The only thing keeping them from being killed was a hidden door behind a bookshelf. Having to deal with little food or survival supplies and being silent a majority of the time was just a small part of there struggles. Here you can see some of the massive destruction and safety this pace brought the Jews of the Holocaust.
Life in the Secret Annex was a difficult transition for the Frank and Van Daan family. First of all, they were not allowed to go outside. What would you do if you were condemmed into a small living space with eight people? Talking to the same person over and over again, never getting some fresh air. Well, it beats being captured, and sent to your death in a concentration camp. Thats what they sacrificed to survive -- their freedom. Close friends had to bring them supplies and food. They had to stay very quiet so no one would hear them. Everyday, they worried about someone finding them, and eventually being killed or sent to a camp.
Anne and mostly everyone was sick of each other. In fact, Anne wrote in her diary how she longed for someone else to talk to, and be with her friends and other family members. That's when she found comfort in talking to Peter. This is due to being so lonely and tired of being in a closed space, not being able to do the things she wanted to do. In addition to that, everyone would not get too well along with one another. Mostly because of Mrs. Van Daan, a selfish and lucid woman. Who only thought of her needs.

The Annex was fairly large, large enough to fit two families. The entrance to the Annex was concealed by a bookcase. There were a few rooms which were bedrooms, washrooms, an attic, and a kitchen. Margot and Anne shared a room and there was another area called the the Frank family sitting area/bedroom. There was a room/study for everyone and a washroom. Upstairs was where the Van Daan's stayed. They had a living room, a kitchen and bedrooms. Peter Van Daan had his own room or apartment as they called it. Anne wrote most of her diary in the study.
Overall, The Secret Annex was an extreme struggle to the two families, but also a savior. without it, every single person could have endured a lot more suffering then they ended up having. Although it was a cramped place, and annoyance spiraled throughout the quarters, everyone made do. That shows the annex was a safe haven and a road to heartache. |
